Todos conocemos el Roscón de Reyes. Más grande o más pequeño, de nata, trufa o crema, hay algo en lo que todos coinciden: ocultan dos sorpresas, un haba y una figurita. Pero no siempre fue así, y no siempre fue una tradición ligada a la Navidad cristiana.
El Roscón de Reyes tiene, en realidad, un origen pagano. En las Saturnales romanas se comía una gran torta circular en cuyo interior se hallaba un haba. El afortunado que la encontraba en su porción era nombrado rey de la fiesta, y todos los presentes debían rendirle pleitesía y obedecer sus demandas.
Con el tiempo, y como tantas otras formas culturales, la festividad fue absorbida por la tradición cristiana, aunque no sufrió excesivos cambios. Seguía celebrándose de forma similar a la Antigua Roma en el Occidente cristiano allá por el año mil, eso sí, con pequeñas variaciones en según qué países (en algunos lugares, por ejemplo. el haba era sustituida por un anillo). En este momento, la torta ya recibía el nombre de pastel de Reyes y y servía para cerrar las fiestas navideñas.
Según la investigadora Rachel Arié, los habitantes e Al-Ándalus, con motivo del primero de enero del calendario juliano, tenían la costumbre de intercambiar regalos, y preparaban para ese día pasteles en forma de ciudades (mada’in), pero sin habas en el interior.
Con esta fiesta y su roscón se cerraba al igual que en la actualidad el tiempo de Navidad. Una tradición milenaria que se mantiene como una de las más populares en las festividades navideñas. Mañana, Día de Reyes, muchos hogares desayunarán roscón y descubrirán quién se hace este año con la corona.
