Avanzan a buen ritmo las labores de acondicionamiento del área recreativa de Castillo de Lara, en el municipio de Betancuria, que ejecutan las consejerías de Sostenibilidad y Gestión Medioambiental del Cabildo de Fuerteventura. Esta actuación incluye tareas de reforestación, que ya han sido iniciadas, con la plantación de 6.000 ejemplares de diferentes especies como retama, almácigo, cornical o romero marino, procedentes de la Estación Biológica de La Oliva.
Los consejeros Lola García y Pedro Martínez indican que las repoblaciones se protegen, además, contra roedores y ganado caprino asilvestrado con la mejora del vallado del perímetro de la finca. Se eliminan también las especies arbóreas muertas con desbroce y limpieza, y se instala una red de riego
La inversión asciende a más de 1,2 millones de euros, cofinanciados por el Fondo Europeo Agrícola de Desarrollo Rural (FEADER). Ha incluido, asimismo, la rehabilitación de muros de piedra de las laderas y lecho de los barrancos, elementos que contribuyen a frenar las aguas de escorrentía, los procesos de erosión del suelo y la desertificación. Gran parte de estos muros se encuentran en la zona de Parra Medina, respetando el trazado y talud de los existentes.
